7 Surprisingly Useful Things You Can Do With Expired Foods

I know, I know... it happens. Sometimes we don't get to use food we've purchased before it goes bad, but that doesn't mean you should just throw it away! There are ways to safely use expired food in recipes, for crafts, for beauty, and more. You can still do something useful with those sad, expired foods in the back of your fridge. Discover 7 amazingly useful things you can do with expired foods.

1. Use sour milk to make cakes, cookies, waffles and pancakes.
Sour milk is a great substitute for buttermilk and tastes great in baked goods.

2. Sanitize your kitchen with dry white wine.
The alcohol, combined with the acid, helps remove stains and kill germs.

Warning: the acidity can damage some countertops like granite.

3. Exfoliate your face with expired Greek yogurt.
Greek yogurt is packed with lactic acid, a common ingredient in beauty products. To use your slightly expired yogurt as a face mask, mix:
2 tablespoons Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon honey (a natural moisturizer).
Apply to your face and leave on for 15 minutes before washing off with warm water.

4. Condition wooden furniture with expired mayo.
The oil in mayonnaise helps moisturize solid wood tabletops to restore moisture and even remove water stains.

5. Turn stale bread into breadcrumbs.
If your bread is still a little soft, cut it into 1/2-inch cubes and bake it in a 300-degree oven until all the moisture is gone. Then fill your blender up to one-third full with the dried cubes and blend until desired consistency. Store the crumbs in the freezer.

6. Replant celery stalks.
So often I've only used one or two stalks of celery. Instead of throwing away leftover celery that has gone stale, use the base to grow more!

Place the base in a small bowl of water for about a week until new leaves form in the center. The leaves will be yellow at first, but they will eventually turn green. When that happens, plant the celery in the ground or in a pot of soil.

7. If you have some old eggs on hand, save the shells.
Eggshells are great for your garden because they are rich in calcium and other minerals.
Just crush them into small pieces and sprinkle them around your established plants. You can also sprinkle eggshells in the bottom of holes as you plant to give seedlings a boost.
