Herringbone Half Double Crochet Stitch Photo Tutorial

The Herringbone Half Double Crochet Stitch is a great variation to the regular half double crochet.

The stitch offers some unique texture, and showcase a lovely Herringbone patterning as the rows slants sideways.

The Herringbone hdc is great for crochet garments, but can also be used for crochet projects such as baby blankets, scarves, afghans, dishcloth and so much more.

Materials

• Crochet hook size: 6 mm / US: J – 10 / UK: 4
• We Crochet – Dishie. It’s a 4 medium / worsted yarn.

Notes

• This pattern is a stitch multiple of 1 stitches. Add 1 for base chain.

To Make A 15 cm x 15 cm / 6 x 6 Inch Square

• To make this swatch, with the hook & yarn give, I needed to crochet: Ch 22 st, for a total of 21 stitches per row. 20 rows. 

Instructions

Step 1: Chain row: Decide how many stitches you want. 

Chain any number of stitches

Step 2: Yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop

Yarn over and pull up a loop from 4th chain from hook. Skipped stitches counts as 1 base chain + chain 2 counting as the first stitch on this row.

Step 3: Pull yarn through the first loop

Pull through the first loop on the hook without yarning over.

Step 4: Yarn over and pull through 2 loops

Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. You’ve now finished 1 Herringbone Half Double Crochet. You can now repeat the steps: yarn over and pull up a loop from next stitch, pull through first loop on hook, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook along the row.

Step 5: Repeat herringbone half double crochet stitches

With the first herringbone half double crochet finished, repeat steps 2-4 to make 1 new stitch for each repeat. 

Step 6: Row 1 of herringbone half double crochet finished

When starting a new row, chain 2, counting as the first stitch of the row.
