The Counterpane Stitch is gorgeous, has a great drape, and is reminiscent of another crochet favorite: the Moss Stitch.

Materials
- worsted weight yarn
- crochet hook
Instructions
Start with any ODD number of chains. I like to use a smaller hook size for the chain and the first row of stitches, then bump up a full MM – or more! – to crochet rows 2 and beyond.
1. In the 3rd chain from the hook, make one Extended Single Crochet (Esc). To do this, you’ll insert your hook in the stitch/chain and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook). Chain one, then yarn over and pull through both loops.
2. Chain one, and skip the next chain stitch.
3. Make one Extended Single Crochet (Esc) in the next chain.
Alternate steps 2 and 3 until there are no chains remaining. Row one complete! Now we’ll start our two-row repeat that makes up the Counterpane Stitch. To start the next row…
Row 2
4. Chain one and turn. Single Crochet in the first stitch.
5. Esc in the chain space of the previous row.
6. Chain one and skip the next stitch.
Alternate steps 5 and 6 until only one chain space and the final stitch remain.
7. Esc in final chain space. Place one single crochet in the final stitch (with no chain in between).
Row 3
8. Chain two and turn. Esc in first stitch.
9. Chain one and skip the next stitch.
10. Esc in the chain space of the previous row.
Alternate steps 9 and 10, placing the final Esc in the final stitch of the row.
Now that you’ve established the two-row repeat, it’s time to alternate those two rows until the piece is as tall as you like.
Some helpful things when crocheting the Counterpane Stitch…
It helps to keep your tension tight while creating the Extended Single Crochets. The back side of the stitch can look a little looser than the front so keeping the tension tight helps to keep things nice and tidy.
The stitch multiple of this is an ODD number, plus 2 for the starting chain. (If you want to end up with 15 stitches you’ll need to start with a chain of 17.)
