Seaweed Crochet Stitch Photo Tutorial

Learn how to crochet the Seaweed Stitch with this photo tutorial.

Materials

  • 6 mm / US J – 10 hook
  • Rosarios Amor-Perfeito (50% wool, 50% acrylic, 100g/3.5oz, 120m/131yd) in rust (30). You will need about 230g/276m/301yd.
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape

Size

  • The Sample is approximately 23 cm / 9.5” tall and 127 cm / 50 inches wide.
  • The Seaweed Stitch requires a stitch multiple of 10 st.

Gauge

  • The gauge for this pattern, in alternating rows of sc and dc, is 12 st by 11 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm / 4” by 4” square.

Abbreviations

  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • WS = wrong side
  • RS = right side

Special Stitches

Puff stitch = yo, pull up a loop in the indicated st, [yo, pull up a loop in the same st] 4 times, yo, pull through all 11 loops.

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.

The turning ch 1, ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand. For example: “dc 1” means to double crochet in the next stitch, “dc 2” means to double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, and “2 dc” means to double crochet twice in the next st.

Instructions

Row 1: Ch 2, dc across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (2 st of the turning chain (doesn’t count as a st) + 1 ch over skipped st), [skip 1, dc, make a puff stitch in the skipped stitch (working around the dc post you just made), ch 1 to close] until last 2 st, skip 1, hdc, turn. <75 puffs>

Row 3: Ch 2, [dc in the puff closing chain of the previous row, make a puff st in the space right before that, ch 1 to close] repeat across, hdc in the 2nd ch of the turning ch below, turn. <74 puffs>

Row 4: Ch 2, sc in the 1st st, skip puff closing chain below, [sc in between the puff and dc below, sc in the ch-1 gap] repeat across, sc in last st, turn. <150 st>

Row 5: Ch 2, dc across, turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc across, turn.

Row 7 – 12: Repeat Row 5 – 6 three times.

Row 13: Ch 2, hdc 3, [2 dc, ch 2, skip 2] until last 3 st, 2 dc, hdc 2, turn.

Row 14: Ch 2, hdc 2, 5 dc down first dc post of pair, ch 1 and rotate your work so you can crochet up the next dc post, 5 dc up 2nd dc post of the pair, [ch 1, skip next dc pair, 5 dc down first dc post of pair, ch 1 and rotate your work so you can crochet up the next dc post, 5 dc up 2nd dc post of the pair] until last 2 st, hdc 2 turn. <49 crinkels + 5 hdc>

Row 15: Ch 1, sc 3, sc in between dc pair 2 rows below, [2 sc in ch-2 gap 2 rows below, sc in between dc pair 2 rows below] until last 2 st, sc 2, turn. <150 st>

Row 16 – 21: Repeat Row 6 – 7 three times.

Row 22 – 24: Repeat Row 2 – 4.

Row 25: Repeat Row 1.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
