The lava stitch is a fun 2 color crochet stitch. It creates some light texture on a background of single crochets. Gorgeous on both sides, it’s great for many projects such as blankets, home décor, shawls etc. Learn how to make the lava stitch with this photo tutorial.

Size

The patterns are written for a 15cm by 15cm / 6” by 6” square.

Stitch Multiple

The pattern needs a multiple of 4 + 1 number of stitches; your starting chain will be a multiple of 4 + 2 for an extra turning chain.

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern is 20 st by 5.5 rows in stitch pattern for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4” by 4”).

Abbreviations

st = stitch

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

skip = miss

Lava 2 Color Crochet Stitch Pattern

With your 5 mm / US H-8 and color A, ch 22,

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across, turn. <21 st>

Row 2 – 6: Ch 1, sc across, turn.

Switch to color B

Row 7: Ch 1, [sc in next st 1 row below, sc in next st 2 rows below, sc in next st 3 rows below, sc in next st 2 rows below] until last st, sc in next st 1 row below, turn.

Row 8 – 12: Ch 1, sc across, turn.

Switch to color A.

Repeat Row 7 to 12.

Switch to color B.

Repeat Row 7 to 12.

Keep repeating Row 7 to 12 in alternating colors until you reach 15 cm / 6”.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.
