8 Hacks to Organize Your Closet

After you take a piece of clothing off the hanger, place that hanger to a dedicated “empty hanger” spot in your closet. With no more stray hangers hogging up valuable closet space, you’ll be able to immediately find a new one when placing clothes back inside.

Items such as tank tops, V-necks, and dresses can easily slide off regular hangers. Make your own nonslip hangers by wrapping a pipe cleaner around the top ends of the hanger. The pipe cleaners act as grippers, the clothes stay where they belong, and you’ve spent mere pennies on this clever solution.

After you declutter your clothing and get rid of anything you don’t love, hang the clothes you are keeping back up, but with the hanger facing backward. Then as you wear an item, place it back in the closet with the hanger facing the correct way. Around every three months or at the time you traditionally switch clothes for the season, evaluate the items with backward-facing hangers. With this method you can instantly see what you didn’t wear and you feel good getting rid of it.

Double your closet space by slipping the large hole of a soda can tab through the hook of a clothes hanger, and then using the bottom hole to hang another hanger. You’ll have instant double hangers! With this simple solution you can hang twice as many items in one space.

Hang a tote bag in the closet and use it to corral items for the dry cleaner or tailor. A second tote bag can serve as a place to hold items to donate (just make sure not to mix up the two of them!).

Handbags should be stored with filler inside so they maintain their shape. Stuff tissue paper in gallon-sized resealable bags and place inside the purse. Now, it’s a cinch to pull out the filler when you are using the bag and replace when finished.

Stuff larger handbags with smaller ones. This method makes it harder to see your individual bags, but the plus side is it saves lots of closet space as well as helps the bags keep their shape.

Arrange the hanging clothing in your closet by type (bottoms, short sleeves, long sleeves, jackets, etc.) and then by color. This not only makes them visually appealing but easier to find.
