If you live in an area where the winters are especially cold and dry, the dry air can play havoc with our skin, hair and nails. It can cause headaches and can even be a nasty trigger for asthma attacks. If you suffer from colds or chesty coughs, the dry air can turn symptoms much worse. And for those who suffer from vision problems, the low humidity can even cause dry eye syndrome and in more extreme cases, blurry vision!

One way to solve this problem in the home is to use a humidifier. But these machines don’t come cheap and they’re not exactly efficient to run either. So I’ve come up with 7 hacks to humidify your home for free. Because a well-balanced atmosphere will help to keep our eyes in check and look after our vision this winter. Wet Clothing

Throwing your clothes in the dryer or letting them air outside during the daytime might seem like a good space-saving idea but an indoor clothes rack could help you re-balance those moisture levels when the dry winter air hits. Hanging wet clothing inside the home will allow for natural evaporation, keeping the air humid.

Place a bowl of water near a heat source:

Some people suggest placing an open bowl of water in the center of a room to keep it humid, but doing this will only provide a moderate and barely noticeable increase. Instead, put that water near a heat source. This is one of the best ways how to humidify a room with air conditioning. The heat will increase the rate of evaporation of the water which will keep your room cooler and more humid over time.

Hot Showers

The extractor fan is essential for preventing too much humidity and mould build-up but in winter, humidity isn’t a bad thing. Let your bathroom/shower rooms air out naturally by leaving the door wide open and let the moisture circulate around the rest of the house before turning on the fan. It’s a great way of recycling energy in the home and will save you so much money instead of buying a humidifier.

Spray your curtains:

Spraying your curtains with water is an extremely fast way to make a room more humid but use sparingly as too much can ruin certain types of curtains.

Indoor Water Features

If you’re open to art and sculpture, perhaps a water feature could be the perfect way to combine art and health? Water features not only instill a sense of calm into the home, but they are natural humidifiers too and can be used all year round. Many fountains work by recycling the same water over and over, this constant running source definitely keeps the room cool for extended periods of time. And there are many cheap options.

Use a bathroom fan:

This is not referring to the exhaust fan that comes in some bathrooms, this is actually used to reduce the moisture in the air. But if you are resistant to the cold using a fan in the bathroom might be a good idea. The cool air generated by the fan will help the room way less stuffy and dry.

Cook On Your Stovetop

While cooking in your oven can dry out the air even more, cooking on your stovetop can moisturize the air! It can also warm up your house too (or at least the kitchen.) Simmer a big pot of soup on your stovetop for a few hours to really take advantage of this effect!
