How to Crochet the Berry Stitch Photo Tutorial

The Crochet Berry Stitch is an easy way to create a bobble stitch that looks like a little “berry”.

It makes a lovely alternative to the crochet puff stitch and a beautiful textured stitch. It’s a perfect stitch for crochet blankets and washcloths because of its nice texture.

Learn how to crochet the Berry Stitch with this photo tutorial.

Materials

  • Crochet hook 5.0 mm / H
  • Worsted (#4) weight yarn – I used Knit Picks – Mighty Stitch

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • yo – yarn over

Notes

  • The Berries are worked on the wrong side of the project so they will “pop” on the right side.
  • If you want the berries to pop more, you can work a slip stitch instead of a single crochet after the Berry Stitch.

Instructions

Chain an even number of chains.

Row 1 (RS): Work 1 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across, turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, 1 sc in 1st sc.

Work a Berry Stitch: yo, insert hook in next st, yo and pull yarn through (3 loops on hook).

Yo and pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hook).

Yo, insert hook into same st, yo and pull through (5 loops on hook).

Yo and pull yarn through all 5 loops.

Continuing Row 2 (WS):

After you worked the Berry Stitch, work 1 sc in the next stitch.

Continue working: * 1 Berry stitch in next sc, 1 sc in next sc; Repeat from * until the end of the row, turn.

Row 3 (RS):

Ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch across, turn.

Row 4 (WS): Ch 1, work 1 sc in 1st sc.

* 1 Berry in next sc, 1 sc in next sc; Repeat from * until the end of the row, turn.

Repeat rows 3-4, make sure to finish with row 3.
