How to Crochet the Christmas Lights Stitch Tutorial

A new stitch pattern here on the blog…today we get to learn how to crochet the Christmas Lights Stitch! I’m super excited to show you how to make this one, because it uses a really neat technique called Surface Crochet.
Surface crochet is a technique where you work on top of a finished piece of crocheted fabric. The most commonly used method is to work slip stitches on top of single crochet to create stripes. However, surface crochet is not limited to this alone!
As we learn how to crochet the Christmas Lights Stitch, we’ll make a green square first. Then we’ll work some other stitches on across the surface with bright colors to resemble lights!
Materials
- Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver)
- H/5mm hook
Abbreviations
- MC - main color
- CC - contrasting color
- fsc - foundation single crochet
- ch - chain
- sc - single crochet
- sk - skip
- rep - repeat
Notes
- Stitch pattern is multiple of 2+1
- Ch 3 at beginning of rows counts as dc
- Ch 1 at beginning of rows does NOT count as sc
Instructions
Background Square: With MC, fsc a multiple of 2+1 (to start with a chain stitch, you’ll need a multiple of 2, and then one row of single crochet).
Row 1: Ch 1, sc across, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc. *Ch 2, sk next sc, sc in next sc. Rep from * until 1 sc left. Sc in last sc, turn.
Row 3-4: Ch 1, sc across, turn.
Rep rows 2-4 until the square is your desired size.
Surface Crochet: Join a CC around the post of the second sc of Row 2 (the ch/sc row). Ch 2, sc around the post of the same st. *Ch 2. Sc around the post of the next sc from row 2. Ch 2, sc around the post of the same stitch. Rep from * across all the sc of Row 2. Fasten off.
Repeat these steps with different contrasting colors across all the rows that have sc and chs! (Row 5, 8, 11, etc).
