How to Crochet the Sultan Stitch Tutorial

Sultan Stitch is very similar to other crochet stitches we have seen, including shell stitch, but it’s a bit more complex and has more texture.

You can use it to make wool blankets or to make airy cotton garments.

Materials

Instructions

Multiple of 4 + 2 stitches

Add 3 extra chains for the foundation chain.

Row 1: make one double crochet, chain 2 and one double crochet into the sixth chain from the crochet hook, *skip the next 3 stitches, make one double crochet, chain 2, and one double crochet into the next stitch*.

Repeat from * to * until there are 3 stitches remaining, skip the next 2 stitches, and make a double crochet into the last stitch. Turn your work.

Row 2: chain 3, skip the first 2 double crochets, *make 4 double crochets into the space formed by the 2 chains from the previous row, skip the next 2 double crochets*.

Repeat from * to * until the end of the row, skip the last double crochet and make a double crochet into the last chain in the row. Turn your work.

Row 3: chain 4, make a double crochet into the space formed by the two double crochets from the previous row, *skip the next 4 double crochets (they make up a group), make a double crochet, chain 2, and make a double crochet in the space left before the next group of double crochets*.

Repeat from * to * ending with a double crochet, one chain, and a double crochet in the space formed between the last double crochet from the previous row and the turning chain from the previous row.

Row 4: chain 3, skip the first double crochet, make 2 double crochets in the space formed by the turning chain from the previous row, *skip 2 double crochets, make 4 double crochets in the space formed by the 2 chains in the previous row*.

Repeat from * to *, ending with 3 double crochets in the last chain of the row. Turn your work.

Row 5: chain 3, skip the first 3 double crochets, *make one double crochet, chain 2, and one double crochet in the space left before the next group of double crochets. Skip 4 double crochets (they make up a group) *.

Repeat from * to * until the end, skip the last 2 double crochets and make a double crochet in the space of the chain from the previous row. Turn your work.

Repeat rows 2 to 5 until the desired length.
