Crochet Wheat Stitch – Waves of Grain Pattern Photo Tutorial

The Waves of Grain Pattern is my version of a crochet wheat stitch.

Combining v stitch with puff stitches creates a gorgeous wheat texture and a cozy fabric, perfect for blankets.

Materials

  • Crochet hook 5.0 mm / H (I love the Etimo Hooks).
  • Worsted (#4) weight yarn – I used Sirdar Country Classic Worsted.

Gauge

  • In pattern: 18 sts x 10 rows = Approximately 4 inches x 4 inches.

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • Puff – (yo, insert hook into indicated st, yo and pull up a loop) x 3 times working into same st, yo and pull through all 7 loops on hook
  • sk – skip
  • st – stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • sp – space
  • V-hdc – [1 hdc, ch 1, 1 hdc] in same stitch/space
  • V-Puff – [1 puff, ch 1, 1 puff] in same stitch/space
  • yo – yarn over
  • RS – right side
  • WS – wrong side

How to crochet the puff stitch (puff)

(yo, insert hook into indicated st/sp, yo and pull up a loop) x 3 times working into same st/sp, yo and pull through all 7 loops on hook.

Notes

  • Stitch multiple: this pattern is a stitch multiple of 6 +6+1 (turning ch).
  • Chain 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
  • Chain 3 at the beginning of the row counts as 1 hdc + ch 1 space.
  • Every 3 rows, the V-puff’s and V-hdc are being shifted.

Waves of Grain Pattern – a Crochet Wheat Stitch

Chain a multiple of 6 plus 6+1 (turning ch).

Row 1 (RS): 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch to the end of the row, turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc + ch 1 here or throughout), 1 hdc in next sc (pic 1).

* Sk next 2 sc (pic 2), V-Puff in next sc (pics 3&5), sk next 2 sc, V-hdc in next sc (pic 6); Repeat from * to last 4 sc. Sk next 2 sc, 1 Puff in next sc (pic 7), ch 1, 1 hdc in last sc (pic 8), turn.

Row 3 (RS): Ch 3 , 1 Puff in next ch-1 sp (pics 1&2).

* Sk next Puff & hdc, V-hdc in next ch-1 sp (pic 3), sk next hdc & Puff, V-Puff in next ch-1 sp (pic 4); Repeat from * to last 4 sts. Sk next Puff & hdc, 1 hdc in next ch-1 sp (pics 4&5), ch 1, 1 hdc in last hdc (top of beginning ch 2) (pics 5&6), turn.

Row 4 (WS): Ch 3, 1 hdc in next ch-1 sp.

* Sk next hdc & Puff, V-Puff in next ch-1 sp, sk next Puff & hdc, V-hdc in next ch-1 sp; Repeat from * to last 4 sts. Sk next hdc & Puff, 1 Puff in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 1 hdc in last hdc (top of beginning ch 2), turn.

Row 5 (RS): Ch 3, 1 hdc in next ch-1 sp (pic 1).

* Sk next Puff & hdc, V-Puff in next ch-1 sp (pic 2), sk next hdc & Puff, V-hdc in next ch-1 sp (pic 3); Repeat from * to last 4 sts. Sk next Puff & hdc, 1 Puff in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 1 hdc in last hdc (top of beginning ch 2) (pic 4), turn.

Rows 6-8: Repeat rows 3-5.

Rows 9-11: Repeat rows 3-5.

Rows 12-13: Repeat rows 3-4.

Row 14 (WS): Ch 1 (dpesn’t count as a st), 1 sc in each st (including ch-1 sp) until last ch-3 sp (pic 5), 2 sc in ch-3 sp (pic 6), turn.
