Crochet spike stitches are a great way to create depth and texture in a crochet pattern. Not only do they add to create thickness in a pattern, but when worked in multiple colours they can create layers in a project.

Notes

This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in two colours labelled colour A and colour B.

To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch, you will need a multiple of three stitches for your foundation chain.

For example, ch 30.

Instructions

Row One:

With colour A, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row Two:

Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Switch to colour B in the final st. Ch 1, turn.

Row Three:

With colour B, sc in the 1st st, *sk the next st, spike st in the next st 2 rows below, sc in the next st of the previous row, spike stitch in the previous st 2 rows below (this is the same st as your previous spike st); Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the top of the final st. Ch 1, turn.

Row Four:

Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Switch to colour A in the final st. Ch 1, turn.

Row Five:

With colour A, sc in the 1st st, *sk the next st, spike st under the next st 2 rows below, sc in the next st of the previous row, spike stitch in the previous st 2 rows below (this is the same st as your previous spike st); Rpt from * across ending with an sc in the top of the final st. Ch 1, turn.

Row Six:

Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Switch to colour B in the final st. Ch 1, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern simply repeat rows 5-6 for pattern switching colours after every 2 rows (For example, in the next repeat of row five you will work in colour B then switch back to colour A at the end of row six and so on). Fasten off, weave in your ends.
