How to Crochet the River Stitch Photo Tutorial

I love the easy flow and unique look of the River Stitch crochet pattern. It has a Tunisian crochet feel that would make a gorgeous blanket.

The River Stitch crochet pattern has a wonderful, unique, banded look to it. The look is created by drawing up loop through the post of the stitch prior to it.

The stitches are therefore linked together creating the solid fabric. A return row of single crochet stitches in between each cluster stitch row means that the texture in the pattern is all to the front side.

It has a fun, easy rhythm to it and the final pattern has a lot of drape and is not too dense.

Notes

  • This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.

Instructions

To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch, you may use any number of stitches for your foundation chain. For example, ch 30.

Row One: Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each st across. Ch 4, turn.

Row Two: Beg Cl into the starting ch, CL into each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row Three: Sc in the 1st st and in each st across. Ch 4, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, simply repeat rows 2 and 3. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
