How to Crochet the Bead Stitch Photo Tutorial

Learn how to crochet the Bead Stitch with this photo tutorial.

This eye catching stitch is a great way to add interest to an otherwise simple pattern.

The Bead Stitch looks similar to a puff stitch. One great thing about this stitch pattern is that it’s wrong side looks the same as the front of the fabric.

This is a two row repeat. The first row of single crochet and the next row is a bead stitch. And that’s it.

Materials

  • #4 medium worsted weight yarn
  • 5 mm US Size H-8 crochet hook

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet stitch
  • rep – repeat
  • sc – single crochet stitch

Notes

The stitch multiple is an even number of stitches. So you want your first row to have an even number. The starting chain is one more, to account for the turning chain.

Instructions

Start with a slip knot on your hook. Begin with an odd number of chains for your foundation chain.

For this tutorial I Ch 21.

Row 1. Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch to the end of row, turn. (20 sts)

Row 2. Ch 3, which will count as a the first stitch.

Dc in next stitch.

Yarn over and insert the hook from the front to the back, around the post of the double crochet you just made, like a front post double crochet.

Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on your hook),

Yarn over, insert hook from front to back, yarn over and pull up a loop again (5 loops on your hook).

Repeat last step again (7 loops on your hook).

Yarn over and pull through only 6 loops (2 loops on your hook).

Yo and pull through the last 2 loops on your hook. One bead stitch complete.

Row 2. (cont.) Skip 1 stitch, dc in next stitch, bead stitch: *{yo, insert hook around post of dc just made, yo and pull up a loop} repeat from * 2 more times until you have 7 loops on your hook, yo and pull through 6 loops (2 loops left on hook), yo and pull through last 2 loops.

Row 2. (cont.) Continue to repeat across until 2 stitches left, always skipping one stitch, making a double crochet and working the bead stitch around the post of that dc.

Row 2. (cont.) On last 2 stitches, skip 1, and dc in last stitch at the end of the row, turn.

Row 3. Ch 1, sc in same stitch and in each stitch across, turn. (20 sts)

Row 4. Repeat Row 2.

Row 5. Repeat Row 3.

Continue to repeat Rows 2 - 3 for length.

Tip - go up a hook size or keep your tension loose if so many wraps is a problem for you.
