How to Crochet the ZigZag Cable Stitch Photo Tutorial

If you enjoy working cable stitches, you will enjoy working this easy Zigzag Cable stitch crochet pattern.

Crochet cables are a wonderful way to add texture and design to a project. In the Zigzag Cables today, the cables will run vertically along your fabric.

I have worked them as a single cable, but you could easily modify the pattern so that the cables include two rows of post stitches, making them double thick.

Learn how to crochet the ZigZag Cable Stitch with this photo tutorial.

Materials

  • worsted-weight yarn
  • 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook

Abbreviations

  • Ch – Chain Stitch
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Fptr – Front Post Triple/Treble
  • Hdc – Half Double Crochet
  • Rpt – Repeat
  • Sc – Single Crochet
  • Sl St – Slip Stitch
  • Yo – Yarn Over

Notes

  • This stitch is worked in rows in this tutorial and it may be worked in one colour or many. I will be working this pattern in a single colour.
  • To begin, make a slip knot and make a foundation chain. For this stitch, you will need a multiple of four stitches for your foundation chain. For example, ch 32.

Instructions

Row One:

Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each st across. Ch 3, turn.

Row Two:

Dc in the next st and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row Three:

Sc in the 1st st, sk the next 3 sts 2 rows below, fptr in the next st 2 rows below, *sc in each of the next 3 sts (Note: do not work into the st directly behind the fptr), sk the next 3 sts 2 rows below, fptr in the next st 2 rows below; Rpt from * across, sc in each of the final 5 sts (including the turning ch). Ch 3, turn.

Row Four:

Dc in the next st and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row Five:

Sc in the 1st st and in each of the next 3 sts, *fptr around the post of the previous fptr 2 rows below, sc in each of the next 3 sts; Rpt from * across, sc in each of the final 2 sts. Ch 3, turn.

Row Six:

Dc in the next st and in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row Seven:

Sc in the 1st st, sk the next 3 sts 2 rows below, fptr in the next fptr 2 rows below, *sc in each of the next 3 sts, sk the next 3 sts 2 rows below, fptr in the next fptr 2 rows below; Rpt from * across, sc in each of the final 5 sts (including the turning ch). Ch 3, turn.

And that’s it!

For the rest of the pattern, repeat rows 4-7. Fasten off, weave in your ends.
