How to Crochet Chain Loop Stitch

Try the super simple chain loop stitch that will make any project stand out!

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced crocheter, learning a new stitch like the chain loop stitch can open many creative possibilities. It is an easy stitch to master. So are you ready to learn how to crochet the chain loop stitch? Let’s take a look!

To perform the chain loop stitch, you will need:

  • Crochet hook – choose a hook that corresponds to the yarn. I recommend a thick yarn which requires a hook size of 8mm to 10mm
  • Yarn – choose a thicker yarn that adds to the texture of the result.
  • Scissors – to cut off excess yarn
  • Needle – to fasten and weave in the ends

To crochet this stitch pattern you need the following stitches:

Slip Knot

Use the crochet hook to draw the yarn through the loop and pull the loop until it is tight

Chain (CH)

Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front.

Pull the hook with the yarn, through the loop that is on your hook

Half Double Crochet (HDC)

Yarn over and put your hook into the next stitch

Yarn over and pull the yarn through

Then yarn over again and pull the yarn through all three loops on the hook

To begin a new row, chain two for a turning chain then turn your work. Continue with the half double crochet stitch in the next stitch and repeat as described

Slip Stitch (SL ST)

Slide the hook through a stitch you want to crochet a slip stitch

Yarn over the hook

Draw up a loop and pull it through the loop on your hook

This stitch pattern is written in US terminology. The turning chain doesn’t count as a stitch. We are using the Back Loop Only (BLO) for the slip stitch which means you crochet this stitch only in the back loop of that stitch.

Crochet any number of chain stitches. For this swatch, I chained 14 stitches.

Foundation Make a slip knot and crochet 14 stitches

Row 1 Insert hook in the back bump of 2nd stitch, HDC in the back bump until the end of the chains. CH 1 and turn

Row 2 SL ST BLO in the first stitch, CH 5, * SL ST BLO in the next stitch, CH 5, repeat from * until the last stitch. CH 2 and turn

Row 3 HDC in the front loop of every stitch from the previous row. CH 1 and turn

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have enough rows and mastered the stitch pattern.
