Crochet Tutorial: Multicable Stitch

In this tutorial, we will explore the captivating world of the multicable stitch and guide you through the step-by-step process of creating this eye-catching pattern. From understanding the structure of cables to working the necessary techniques, you will gain the knowledge and confidence to incorporate this stitch into your crochet repertoire.

The multicable stitch involves crossing multiple sets of stitches to create interlaced cables that mimic the look of traditional knitted cables. Back Post tr /dc – BPtr/dc:

work like normal tr/dc but insert your hook from back to front between the the first and second stitches in the row below, and then from front to back again between the second and third stitches.

Foundation Chain: make 70 ch.

Row 1: skip 3 ch miss, work 1 tr/dc in each of 21ch, 6tr/dc in next ch, again 6 tr/dc in next ch, 1 tr/dc in each of 21ch, 6tr/dc in next ch, make 1 tr/dc in each ch to the end of the row, turn.

Row 2: 2 ch, 5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 tr/dc in the same st, 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc, 12 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 tr/dc in the same st, 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc, 24

BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 tr/dc in the same st, 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc, 1 h.tr / h.dc in third ch, turn.

Row 3: 2 ch, 5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc worked over 5 tr/dc below (see pictures), 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc.

Making a cable

Step 1:

Work this step 4 times over next 24 stitches. Ccrochet 6 FPtr/dc,

2ch, make 1 FPtr/dc over last stitch,

then turn and work 5 BPtr/dc.

Turn, make 2 ch and 6 FPtr/dc,

2 ch, work 1sl.st in space of 2 ch and 1 sl.st in last FPtr/dc below (see pictures).

Now you have four cable parts.

Continue crochet the row:

5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc worked over 5 tr/dc below, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc. For small cable work the "Step 1" two times over next 12 stitches.

Now you have two cable parts.

Continue crochet the row:

5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc worked over 5 tr/dc below, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc, 1 h.tr / h.dc in second ch, turn.

Row 4: ch, 5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 tr/dc in the same st, 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc.

Making small cable

Step 2:

at first crochet 6 BPtr/dc over second part of cable (see pictures). Hold in front the first part of cable.

Make 3 ch, drop the loop from your hook, insert your hook from back to front under the top 2 loops of the first stitch of the group, grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

Now work 6 BPtr/dc over first part of cable.

Continue crochet the row:

5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 tr/dc in the same st, 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc. Making big cable

Work "Step 2".

Then work 6 BPtr/dc over fourth part of cable. Hold in front this part. After that, crochet 6 BPtr/dc over third part of cable.

Make 3 ch, drop the loop from your hook, insert your hook from back to front under the top 2 loops of the first stitch of the group, grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

Continue crochet the row:

5 FPtr/dc , 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 tr/dc in the same st, 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 5 FPtr/dc, 1 h.tr / h.dc in second ch, turn.

Row 5: 2 ch, 5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc worked over 5 tr/dc below, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc, 24 FPtr/dc (over big cable), 5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc worked over 5 tr/dc below, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc, 12 FPtr/dc (over small cable), 5 BPtr/dc , 1 FPtr/dc, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc worked over 5 tr/dc below, 1 BPtr/dc, 1 FPtr/dc, 5 BPtr/dc, 1 h.tr / h.dc in second ch, turn.
